I have been studying the lives of single persons in Japan (Hikon) and the rising demands for care work in the aging populations of Japan and Korea, with regard to the postmodern societies' changing family and gender relations. My current research topics include (1) the discourse of low fertility rate and its impact on the changing social status of people with no marriage experience; (2) gender differences in experiences of aging; (3) men's caregiving for the elderly and reconstruction of masculinity; (4) Korean women's migration to Japan.
