<Nobody's Normal: Understanding and Eliminating the Stigma of Mental Illnesses and Developmental Disorders>
<강연 소개>
본 강연에서 그린커 교수는 정신적 질환의 낙인에 대한 근본 원인, 그러한 낙인을 최소화하고 치료접근성을 개선하기 위한 다양한 노력들에 대한 본인의 연구와 저서에 대해 논의합니다. 특히 정신 건강 지식에 대한 자본주의적 기원, 심리학 분야 성장에 있어 전쟁 및 군사의 역할, 확장하는 의료화 시대에서의 정신건강 치료의 어려움에 대해 조명합니다. 각각의 영역에서 그린커 교수는 한국에서의 정신 질환과 발달 장애의 역사적이고 문화적인 요소들에 대해 다룰 예정입니다.
<강연자 소개>
로이 리처드 그린커는 조지워싱턴 대학교의 인류학과와 국제 정무학과의 교수입니다. 또한 그린커 교수는 Anthropological Quarterly의 편집장으로서도 활동 중입니다. 그린커 교수는 아프리카, 한국, 자폐에 관해 다양한 인류학 연구서를 출판했으며, 트랜스젠더 낙인, 백신에 대한 잘못된 정보, 자폐 스펙트럼 장애의 DSM 기준, COVID의 기억 등에 대한 주제로 뉴욕타임즈, 로스앤젤레스 타임즈, 워싱턴 포스트, CNN 온라인, 월스트리트 저널 등에 오피니언 기사를 기고하였습니다.
그린커 교수는 신작 Nobody's Normal: How Culture Created the Stigma of Mental Illness (NY: W.W. Norton, 2021)를 출간하였고, 이는 국내에서 『정상은 없다: 문화는 어떻게 비정상의 낙인을 만들어내는가』, (정해영 역, 메멘토 출판사, 2022)라는 제목의 번역본으로 출판되었습니다.
<Lecture Summary>
In this lecture, Prof. Roy Richard Grinker will discuss his research and writing on the root causes of the stigma of mental illnesses and the effort to minimize stigma and improve access to care. He will focus on three topics: the capitalist origins of mental health knowledge, the role of wars and the military in the growth of the psychological disciplines, and the challenges to mental health care in an era of increasing medicalization. In each of these areas, he will address the distinctive historical and cultural aspects of mental illness and developmental disorders in Korea.

Roy Richard Grinker is Professor of Anthropology and International Affairs at the George Washington University and the Editor-in-Chief of Anthropological Quarterly.
He is the author of numerous publications on the anthropology of Africa, Korea, and autism, including op-eds in the New York Times, L.A. Times, Washington Post, CNN on-line, and The Wall Street Journal, on topics such as the stigma of being transgender, vaccine disinformation, DSM criteria for autism spectrum disorder, and COVID memory.
